Light guides and fabrics

Technical information on the most important parts of the SUNFIBRE® system. In this section, you’ll find an overview of the individual components, their properties, functions, and key advantages. This will help you better understand how SUNFIBRE® works and what this technology offers.

Light guides

The light guides have a circular cross-section and are available in the standard 2 mm and 3 mm diameters. We first recommend the 3 mm lighting cable, which is more resistant and better at directing the light, allowing it to reach greater distances while still being suitable for more demanding applications, such as in workwear or tactical wear. The 2 mm lighting cable is then more flexible and lighter, making it perfect for athletic clothing and products.

The light guides are made of a combination of two to three materials, ensured by diffused light emission. They’re flexible, protected against UV rays (thanks to the white surface coating), and deploy patented textile protection.

The length of the light guides in one set can stretch as far as 180 cm in some colours, which equals up to 360 cm for two-sided light guides (the final length is always individual, depending on the given clothing’s functional needs). For the most even lighting, however, we recommend the 150 cm long light guides.

Fabric sheaths

We offer two types of fabric sheaths: piping and tubing. For more information, see the Attachment Methods and our full colour selection. We use a polyester blend as standard on our light guides, which is also represented by our patented SUNFIBRE® solution.

We integrate the lighting cable into the product using our patented SUNFIBRE® solution: piping. We most often use polyester, however, the piping can also be made of other varied materials.

Diodes

In our sets, we use either one diode (one-sided set) or two (two-sided set) that evenly direct the light throughout the entire length of the lighting cable. Compared to LED tape, where the individual diodes are placed in a line, creating light points, SUNFIBRE® technology provides homogeneous lighting throughout the entire fibre.

Our standard diode colours include amber red (AR), blue (BL), green (GR), and cool white (CW). We also offer special infrared diodes at wavelengths of either 850 or 940 nm.

Fabric sheath and diode colours

We only use quality diodes by renowned suppliers, such as OSRAM. If you’re interested, we’d be happy to send you the individual technical sheets.

Light source

The light source is located inside a discreet pocket that houses all the electronics, and is designed to regulate charging from the power bank (including powering it on and off).

For a one-sided set, the unit houses one diode. This option is made using overmoulding (injection moulding), and it doesn’t use any glue, ensuring its waterproofness and its low energy consumption. This is the most price-effective solution.

The two-sided set uses two diodes. It is not overmoulded, yet it’s still water-resistant. Its advantage comes from being easier to integrate into paired clothing parts (e.g., gloves and pants), and it offers more even lighting in longer light guides.

The light source parts also include thermo-management, which ensures they don’t overheat when used for long periods. This is especially important should the unit come in direct contact with the skin.

The light source parts are included in our patented solution, which ensures the light is directed from the diode to the lighting cable so as to maintain even lighting throughout its entire length.

Control buttons

Basic control buttons:

Floating button – ideal for integration into linings and under fabrics or in sets with fabric sheath tubing. It’s not typically visible on the product surface. If the button is placed under the fabric (e.g., in a pocket or lapel), a custom logo or graphic image can be placed over it, e.g., the symbol of an off/on switch.
Sew-in button – the button is sewn directly on the product surface, making it easily and quickly accessible, even when wearing gloves.

Fidlock – an electromagnetic buckle that controls the entire SUNFIBRE® system when buckled or unbuckled. The clasp knows when it’s open or closed, and it’s equipped with an integrated LED with optional RGB lighting. It’s waterproof and works like a digital switch.

Cables and connectors

USB-C Available with either a straight or curved connector, with a fabric or plastic cable. A dust cap comes as standard with every package; it’s a protective cap to use when washing the product.

USB-A
Available with either a fabric or plastic cable. The connectors have been specially modified to be washable.

IP68 connector A screw-on, water-resistant connector with IP68 protection. Sets with this connector type are supplied with a compatible charging cable that is also water-resistant and features a screw-on end piece.

Power banks

The power banks are not our product; we do not produce them, but we offer open models that have passed our quality assurance. Several types are available, featured in the table below. All of our supplied power banks are high-quality, safe, and certified – see the Technical sheet, including the certification overview. SUNFIBRE® technology can now also be charged directly from your mobile phone (newer models only).

If you want to use your own power bank, we offer the option to have it tested. We verify whether it’s compatible with the SUNFIBRE® set and whether it meets the required parameters for the operational period.
