We deploy varied approaches when integrating our active lighting into fabric-built products, depending on the client’s needs. Most often, our optical fibre is sewn in using our patented piping, allowing it to be incorporated both securely and aesthetically. If a client prefers the removable version, the luminous fibre can be attached with non-fixed components, e.g., perforated reflective tape, fabric loops, or rubber clips.

Piping

The easiest method of integrating SUNFIBRE® into your product. The optical fibre is protected with a fabric sheath, which is easily sewn into any seam. We’ve patented this method, and it’s our most preferred solution

Perforated reflective tape

This solution is optimal for fabrics requiring non-flammability, e.g., special clothing worn by firefighters or miners. It provides two-fold protection, with both active and reflective lighting. We supply it in the form of tape certified for projects requiring non-flammability.

Tubing

With this solution, the lighting cable isn’t permanently integrated into the product (items with no “seam allowance”; no seam to sew into), rather it’s removable. This method offers producers greater flexibility in product design, while users gain the option to attach or detach the lighting cable as they deem fit. Also, all the benefits of the optical fibre’s fabric sheath remain preserved, e.g., UV ray protection and mechanical durability. We recommend not opting for this method for products where the lighting cable could get caught on something (e.g., on a tree branch, etc.).

Tubing comes with various product attachment methods, including rubber clips, loops (e.g., made of reflective tape), or even through MOLLE straps or other bands already featured on the final product.

The SUNFIBRE® system can then be sold together with the product, but also as a standalone accessory. And the user can also use the product either with or without the lighting cables.

Rubber clips

The method of attaching our lighting cables with rubber clips sewn into the product seams is a proven solution for equipment like backpacks, bags, tents, and more. The lighting cable is easy to clip in and out. Our experience has shown us that the best way to attach our optical fibre is to use a greater number of clips. We offer the following as standard:

  • Black (customised MOQ 3000 pcs.)
  • Material: TPU
  • Dimensions: 18 x 17 mm
  • Weight: 1 g/pc

Loops

The SUNFIBRE® system can also be attached using loops. These are sewn onto the final product, with the light cable pulled through. The loops can be made out of different materials depending on your product’s characteristics. We’d be happy to help you choose the optimal attachment method.

Naked

If interested, we can also supply you with the standalone bare optical fibre, which you can then insert into a “tunnel” featured on the final product. This tunnel is typically made of perforated netting or a translucent material.

Using the bare fibres offers greater material and design flexibility, and the ability to remove the fibre from the product is another benefit – e.g., when washing the product at high temperatures. However, this method also comes with several limitations:

  • The lighting cable won’t have its sheath, meaning you’ll need to design your own method of fibre integration, which provides both enough protection and light permeability.
  • The fibre will be more susceptible to mechanical damage and won’t be protected from UV rays.
  • The need to mitigate these risks presents greater development costs.
